THE GOAT MAN

There is a stretch of highway that connects Burley and Oakley Idaho, this highway is about 19 miles long. Another road intersects it at the halfway point. Often people from Oakley who traveled into Burley to go to the bars would leave their drunk friends at this intersection as a practical joke. There was a man from Oakley who worked at a factory near Burley who used this highway to travel to and from work. Often he would drive home after work late at night long after the bars had closed. Every once in a while when he reached the intersection he would see one of these poor drunken fools abandoned at the intersection by their friends and he would offer them a ride back to Oakley on his way home.
One night the man came to a stop at the intersection, he was tired and ready to get home to go to sleep. However as he was about to continue through the stop sign out of the corner of his eye he noticed a man standing near the truck. It was strange because he hadn't noticed him standing there near the stop sign as he approached it. He briefly glanced over and told the man to get in and that he would take him to Oakley. The man didn't move... The driver then leaned over and opened the door to motion the man inside so he could give him a ride, as he opened the door however he noticed that the man from the waist down was covered in thick course hair and that instead of feet he had large hooves like a goat. Shocked he looked up into the mans face... the man stared back at him but his eyes had turned bright red.
Terrified the driver slammed on the gas pedal and sped away from the intersection, he drove for a few minutes breathing hard. Suddenly he heard the sound of loud hoof falls on the pavement. He looked in his rear view mirror but nothing was there, still terrified he pressed down harder on the gas pedal. The sound seemed to stay with him. He was driving as fast as he could but he still heard the sound. He looked around to find where the sound was coming from and noticed that the man who had been at the intersection was now running next to the truck, staring at him the entire time with those bright red eyes.
The driver didn't know what else to do, he couldn't drive any faster and the thing seemed to stay with him no matter what he did running parallel to the truck, just staring at him... The driver began to pray as hard as he could. He prayed that he could get away from this monstrous thing that was chasing him. The sound of the hoof falls got louder and louder as he prayed but the driver blocked them out. He forced his eyes shut so he would stop looking into those bright red eyes and kept praying.
Suddenly he heard the sound of gravel and thought he must have gone off the road into a field. He felt the truck bounce and rumble over rocks and brush. The driver opened his eyes and saw a large metal gate in front of him. He slammed on his brakes as hard as he could and the truck skidded to a stop just in front of the gate. He trembled and his heart pounded as he realized how close he had come to wrecking his truck... just then he remember the terrifying man who had been chasing him. He frantically looked out every window of the truck but could not see the thing anywhere. After a few minutes he calmed down and opened the driver side door and stepped out of the truck.
He walked up to the gate and looked through it, from the light of his headlights he saw that there were several head stones inside the gated metal fence. A graveyard! There was a small sign on the ground in front of the gate that must have fallen off... it read Elba Cemetery. Elba? Elba was the name of a small town which sat on the other side of the mountain range far away from Oakley. In fact in order to get to Elba it was about an hour and a half drive in the other direction he had been going. How did he get here? Wasn't he just on the highway heading to Oakley?
Confused and still shaken the driver realized that the man with the hairy goat legs was gone. His prayer must have been answered... but how and why was he now near this small cemetery outside of Elba? The driver got back into his truck, found the highway, and slowly made his way back home to Oakley.

-This is a story that has been in my family for years. I've always thought that it was bizarre and pretty creepy. It has come to be known as The Goatman Story! I hope you enjoyed it. I thought I would share a good scary story with you for Halloween Season. Oh also I attached a picture that I drew of the Goatman about a year ago. In the illustration I changed a few aspects of him that aren't particularly in the story for the picture... but the drawing is based off the story.

Do you have any good scary stories in your family?
